Buhari orders probe of weapons bought since 2007

Buhari orders probe of weapons bought since 2007

Press statement from the presidency below..

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the National Security Adviser to convene an investigative committee on the procurement of hardware and munitions in the Armed Forces from 2007 till now. The investigative committee's mandate is to identify irregularities and make recommendations for streamlining the procurement process in the Armed Forces.

Accordingly, the National Security Adviser has constituted the Investigative Committee as follows:
AVM J.O.N. Ode (rtd.) - President
R/Adm J.A. Aikhomu (rtd.) - Member
R/Adm E. Ogbor (rtd.) - Member
Brig Gen L. Adekagun (rtd.) - Member
Brig Gen M. Aminun-Kano (rtd.) - Member
Brig Gen N. Rimtip (rtd.) - Member
Cdre T.D. Ikoli - Member
Air Cdre U. Mohammed (rtd.) - Member
Air Cdre I. Shafi'i - Member
Col A.A. Ariyibi - Member
Gp Capt C.A. Oriaku (rtd.) - Member
Mr. I. Magu (EFCC) - Member
Brig Gen Y.I. Shalangwa - Secretary

The establishment of the investigative committee is in keeping with President Buhari's determination to stamp out corruption and irregularities in Nigeria's public service.
It comes against the background of the myriad of challenges that the Nigerian Armed Forces have faced in the course of ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast, including the apparent deficit in military platforms with its attendant negative effects of troops' morale.
The committee will specifically investigate allegations of non-adherence to correct equipment procurement procedures and the exclusion of relevant logistics branches from arms procurement under past administrations, which, very often resulted in the acquisition of sub-standard and unserviceable equipment.

Photo: Guiness World Records recognizes 112yr old Japanese as the world's oldest man

Yasutaro Koide, a 112-year-old resident of Nagoya, Japan, who recommends not smoking, drinking and avoiding stress as his secret to a long life, was on Friday August 21 officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest man. Koide was born on March 13, 1903, and worked as a tailor. He became the oldest man with the death of Sakari Momoi of Tokyo in July at age 112.

Three of his seven children, two of his nine grandchildren and one great grandchild attended a ceremony at a nursing home where he was given a plaque and a green vase. Koike was beaming, but teary-eyed as those attending applauded.

"The best thing is to not overdo," he said. He also recommended not smoking or drinking, and said his favourite food is bread. Koike also recommends "enjoying everything," according to local reports that say he can read the newspaper without glasses.

The newspaper Chunichi Shimbun quoted a granddaughter, Aya Kikuchi, saying her grandfather once tended to be very strict about manners. "He was very stubborn, but he got nicer with age," she said.

"His lifestyle is one that avoids stress." One of the world's fastest-ageing countries, Japan has about 54,000 centenarians. So many, in fact, the government is reportedly considering scrapping or scaling back a 52-year-old programme that presents each person reaching the century mark with an ornate sake dish and letter of congratulations from the prime minister.

The world's oldest person is Susannah Mushatt Jones of Brooklyn, New York, who celebrated her 116th birthday on Monday.

President Buhari to set up special courts for looters

According to a report by Punch, the Federal Government might be establishing special courts to try people who have stolen from the country. Buhari may even have started plans to submit a bill on the special anti-corruption courts to the National Assembly. Sources in the know told the newspaper that the government is currently looking for fearless judges that would prosecute these corrupt individuals.

All the states of the federation will have these special courts so FG is looking for 36 incorruptible judges. A source told Punch that Buhari decided to set up the planned special courts because of the long delay by regular courts in deciding corruption-related cases.

Syrian man walks into his own funeral

Syrian man walks into his own funeral

A Syrian man witnessed his own funeral after pulling himself out from a mountain of rubble where he had survived for 36 hours.

It was believed that Mohammed Rayhan was among 117 people who had died when government forces shelled the market place in Douma, just over six miles north east of Damascus. His family had given up all hope when he failed to return home and started mourning Mr Rayhan's death.

However after three days beneath the rubble he was extricated by rescuers.

With the dust still embedded in his beard and long hair, he returned home.

In doing so he interrupted the final day of mourning, much to the delight of his family.

Mr Rayhan is s now being called the "Living Martyr" after his miraculous survival.

Tonto Dikeh speaks on married life, says she's been married for a long time

Tonto Dikeh speaks on married life, says she's been married for a long time

In an interview with Channels TV, Tonto Dike said she has been married longer than people think

"I have been for a very long time.. Just that I kept the secret to myself..and trying to enjoy married life..yea it just came out like 2-3 days ago.One mistake we do is having this very loud announcement on when you have been engaged and everything and its only normal that the media helps you destroy your marriage before you even get into your home. So,privacy is key in my marriage"she said

Wen asked how being married has influenced her person, Tonto said

"It has changed me a lot I could say. It has. It has changed my perspective of life. It has changed the way I think. For once, it has made me a very happy woman, something that i never used to have. Happiness is everything. If you are not happy, you can never be satisfied with what you have or you can never appreciate all the people. I think it has opened my eyes to be able appreciate people despite the fact that they are who they are. I thank God"she said

On the perception that she is very controversial, Tonto said

"I am a very straightforward person. I am like a book. I am just very open. I think the controversial part of me is something that the media has put upon me. It's just unfortunate that sometimes I help them play that role because of anger. I get so angry sometimes and I help them play that role. But never again. I have leanrt a lot. Like I said before what marriage has done for me. Marriage has changed my perspective. Now, no body can push me to being controversial anymore this interview with re.Sometimes, I handled it really badly ,and sometimes handle it really good. I will say badly because I  responded to negativity and that only just gave an approval that she is a controversial person But I am actually a very sweet loving and godly person.'Controversy is actually very far from me.  I wouldn''t say that I have not experienced controversy from a very early age. I have. Even in secondary school when everybody thought I was the bad girl meanwhile I was the only virgin out of my school .Although I just like to hang around men rather than female and they just have this idea in their head. Oh I like wearing short skirts rather than long skirts. I have always had that thing with misconception. Only those who are very close to me understand me. I have been very stubborn about people understanding me.Like I don't care if you understand me"she said

Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh says Mikel Obi refused to pick his call in London

Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh says Mikel Obi refused to pick his call in London

Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi was not invited by the new Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh to play in the forthcoming 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania. Asked why Mikel was left out of his list, Oliseh said he called Mikel several times but he never responded or called him back

"I went to England on a Thursday and Chelsea was just coming back. We had fixed our visit to coincide with the end of their tour before they played Arsenal. I contacted Obi Mikel, called him on several occasions with no reply; sent him an SMS with no reply, went to London where he plays in the same club with Victor Moses. I called Moses, the phone rang three times and he picked it up and I spoke with him. Moses came to the meeting but he (Mikel) didn't come."

I left to Liverpool to meet the other player and I spent about six hours to go there and back but there was no response from Mikel until I returned here. Till now I have not spoken with Mikel. I think it was yesterday (Wednesday) that I saw a missed call, so at the moment I don't know what the situation is. No player is special, every player is the same, every other player we contacted and spoke with have been invited them" Oliseh said in a media parley yesterday in Abuja
